Particle Physics & CERN

6 November 2018 | 18:00 - 20:00

£3
This event is held in the Pfizer lecture theatre in the Cambridge University Chemistry Department and will be followed with a wine and cheese reception.

Come ‘explore the high energy frontier’ with Professor Daniela Bortoletto! She is an experimental particle physicist working on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, and was also a member of the team that discovered the Higgs Boson in 2012. The LHC has now restarted operation and reached energies of 13 TeV. She is using this data to study the properties of the recently discovered Higgs Boson, including its possible couplings to dark matter particles. She is also searching for higher mass Higgs-like particles. In addition, she is participating in the upgrade of the ATLAS inner tracking system that will be needed by 2022, when the collision rate of the LHC will increase by a factor of 5 above the value for which the experiment was originally designed.
Professor Bortoletto is a Kurti Senior Research Fellow of the Institue of Physics, University of Oxford, before which she was the E. M. Purcell Distinguished Professor of Physics at Purdue University.
